A Rare Quadruplicate Arrangement of Abductor Pollicis Longus Tendons - Anatomical and Clinical Relevance
نویسندگان
چکیده
Movements of the thumb are carried out by extrinsic and intrinsic muscles and have immense phylogenetic and evolutionary significance. The number, length, and thickness of APL accessory tendons may have a functional role in the etiology of DeQuervain’s stenosing tenovaginitis. Thus, precise knowledge of the variations in this region is important for hand surgeons. Additionally, these tendons may prove to be of importance in plastic reconstructive surgeries where they could be utilized as effective transplant tissues. Technological advancements in MRI imaging have enabled hand surgeons to identify the musculo-tendinous and retinacular structures of the dorsum of the hand in detail. Familiarity with the variations in extensor tendons of the hand and fingers is vital for appropriate diagnosis of neurological disorders. Anatomical comprehension is particularly essential for clinical situations related to extensor tendon injuries and inflammatory diseases. The main objective of this report is to illustrate in detail the variant insertion pattern of APL tendon slips and to discuss their functional and clinical relevance.

Multiple tendons of abductor pollicis longus muscle: a cadaveric study with clinical implications.
Abductor pollicis longus (APL) muscle is known to exhibit numerous variations. Variations in the number of tendons of APL muscle may be asymptomatic and are often incidental findings. The present case report, detected in a 42 year male cadaver, describes the APL muscle having three tendons. The presence of accessory tendons may be important in De Quervain's stenosing tendovaginitis. Anatomical ...

Abductor pollicis longus is known for its variations in the form of multiple tendons at its insertion. The present case reports about a variation in the origin of abductor pollicis longus (APL) which has not been cited in the medical literature until date. It has been shown that the intersection area where the APL and extensor pollicis brevis cross over the tendons of the extensor carpi radiali...
متن کاملMultiple tendons of abductor pollicis longus
The extensor compartment of the forearm of the human body is one with frequent variations of its contents. Among all, the abductor pollicis longus (APL) muscle is known to exhibit numerous variations. Variations in the number of tendons of APL muscle may be asymptomatic and often incidental finding [1]. The present variation detected in a 63-year-old male cadaver, describes the APL muscle havin...

BACKGROUND de Quervain's disease is a condition in which there is pain in the radial styloid process caused by stenosing tenosynovitis of the abductor pollicis longus (APL) or/and extensor pollicis brevis (EPB) tendons in the first extensor compartment of the wrist. In this study we studied variations in the tendons of the EPB in the first extensor compartment and its site of insertion. METHO...

Muscle and tendon variations in hand and wrist are not rare; thus their type must be well known in practicing hand surgery. Abductor pollicis longus (APL) and extensor digitorum (ED) are known to exhibit different variations with respect to their attachments. Various studies have reported splitting of the APL and ED [1-8]. The ED has one origin and a common muscle belly that splits into three o...
